We know that jumps are vital in any dance routine, and it is important as a dancer to make these look graceful and effortless. This elegance is earned from many hours of practice and hard work, so we have some simple tips to help you improve your height for jumps and leaps!


1. Film Yourself!

Filming yourself is a great way to pinpoint exactly where in your leaps need work, try using the slow-motion setting to properly see if your takeoff is correct, is your torso in the correct position, are your toes pointed? Focusing on key areas of your jumps and being able to visually see them will help you to focus clearly on what you need to work on.

2. Use Imagery!

Although this may seem somewhat childish, positive energy and attitude do wonders for your performance. Find a relaxing place and close your eyes, envision yourself leaping through the air. This relaxed positive state will ensure you are tensing and hindering your jumps. Concentrate of your take off, arm and leg position and the landing.

3. Use Your Entire Body!

Jumps are not just about leg strength, but rather a whole body experience. When leaping, instead of looking straight forward, bring your eye line slightly higher, aiming higher will inevitably make you jump higher.

Ask yourself these questions:

  • Are my arms straight?
  • Are my shoulders relaxed and pulled down?
  • Is my torso in the correct upright position?
  • Are my toes pointed?


4. Strengthen and Stretch!

This could be one of the most important preparations for jumps and leaps. Working on your flexibility with splits, practising dynamic and static stretching will all benefit your leaps and jumps, making them look more aesthetically pleasing.

Increasing your strength will also bring your leaps higher as there will be more power in your take off, add repetitions of tuck jumps, high skips, and high knees to your morning routine.
